The chemistry of the water below the ice is constantly changing, and it can have serious effects on fish health and the overall balance of the pond ecosystem. This can stress fish, reduce microbial activity, and influence nutrient cycles.

Proper aeration in the winter is vital for fish survival. When a pond freezes completely, it blocks the gas exchange between the water and the atmosphere. This means oxygen can’t enter, and harmful gases can't escape. When winter sets in, protecting your pond or dock from ice damage doesn’t have to be complicated. The right de-icer can keep a small area open all season, allowing gases to escape ponds and preventing costly structural damage around ponds or lifts.

Pick Your Purpose

Before anything else, determine what you are trying to protect or achieve.

• Aquatic Life in your Pond: Focus on creating an opening for gas exchange and preventing fish kills.
• Docks, Boats, and other Marine Infrastructure: The goal is to stop ice pressure from building around supports, hulls, and cables
• Maintaining access to the water for livestock watering, industrial operations, or emergency response situations 

The distinction helps narrow down what type and size of de-icer you’ll need.

Understand How De-Icing Works

A de-icer does not use heating elements to melt the ice; instead, it circulates warmer water from below to the surface, keeping a hole open that prevents ice from forming. In addition, it moves a significant amount of water volume that, through agitation, hinders ice formation. The size of that opening depends on horsepower, depth, and positioning, not just temperature.

Match Power to Conditions

Every pond, dock, and shoreline is different, but these general guidelines help:

• ½ HP: Small ponds or short docks in milder regions
• ¾ HP: Average-sized docks or medium ponds in areas with consistent freezing
• 1 HP: Large ponds, marinas, or regions that see deep freezes for extended periods

In some situations, especially with wide docks, coves, or large areas of infrastructure, you may need multiple de-icers to achieve the coverage you want. Size, water, depth, current, and wind exposure all affect the number of units required.

If you’re unsure (for example, if you don’t know the depth or winter water temperatures), it’s usually safer to size up. A higher-horsepower unit can always be run fewer hours to reduce operating costs.

For De-Icing, Always Have a Backup

If you’re protecting expensive infrastructure or boats, we always recommend keeping a backup de-icer on standby. Winter failures are often sudden, and having a spare ready to drop in can prevent costly damage.

Choose Your Model and Power Setup

Each de-icer size is available in both 120 V and 240 V versions, allowing you to match your available power supply. You can also choose from multiple cord lengths to suit your setup: 25 ft, 50 ft, 100 ft, 150 ft, or 200 ft.

For 240 V units, longer cords are available upon request. Selecting the correct voltage ensures safe and efficient operation, especially for longer cord runs.

Depth and Placement Matter

De-icers work best when installed in at least 4 ft of water, with the motor sitting 12 inches above the bottom. In shallow coves or near shorelines, moving the unit outward a few feet can dramatically improve circulation. For docks, angle the unit so that the flow is directed along the structure, not away from it.

Mounting Options

Choosing the correct mount is just as important as selecting the right horsepower. Each style has its own advantages and considerations:

Vertical Suspension (Rope Mount)

This is one of the most common methods, as every Kasco De-icer comes with two pre-installed 20 ft lengths of rope. The key is to ensure the support ropes are angled outward, not running straight up and down. If the ropes are too vertical, the unit can spin, and the cords may twist or tangle.

Universal Mount

Allows secure attachment to fixed structures such as dock posts or pilings. Made from durable stainless steel, this mount is easy to assemble and install, allowing units to be lowered, angled, and positioned in several orientations to optimize water movement. A mounting pipe is required (pipe not included).

Industrial Mount

A more robust version of the universal mount, designed for heavy-duty or commercial settings. Made with corrosion-resistant stainless steel components, it ensures longevity and reliability in demanding applications. Also requires a separate mounting pipe.

Free-Standing Mount Frame

Ideal for areas without dock posts or pilings. Made with durable stainless steel, it allows precise positioning on the pond or lake bottom while resisting outdoor elements.

Horizontal Float Mount

Secured with stainless steel components below a rectangular float. While usable, it carries notable risks in winter, because the unit sits close to the surface, it is vulnerable to ice damage. Typically used for summer circulation.

360 Oscillator 

Can be added to specific mounts, allowing the unit to sweep back and forth automatically. This increases the de-iced area without requiring multiple units.

Ice Opening Size Guide

Different conditions produce different openings, but a general guide at an average ambient air temperature between -29°C and -18.3°C is as follows:

Angled Units:

• ½ HP: 25’ x 55’ (7m x 17m)
• ¾ HP: 30’ x 75’ (9m x 23m)
• 1 HP: 35’ x 85’ (11m x 26m)

Vertical (Moored) Units:

• ½ HP: 35’ diameter (11 m)
• ¾ HP: 50’ diameter (15 m)
• 1 HP: 60’ diameter (20 m)

Install Before the Ice Arrives

The best time to install your de-icer is late fall, before the surface freezes. If you use your de-icer seasonally, always make sure that the unit is inspected and tested before you really need it! If you’re installing after the ice has already formed, create a small hole using warm water or a drill/auger; however, this can be dangerous and difficult.

Keep It Safe and Efficient

To ensure your de-icer operates safely and effectively:

• Use the correct power source: Always plug your unit into an outdoor-rated GFCI outlet and use the heavy-duty outdoor cord that comes with the unit.
• Proper motor placement: Keep the motor submerged; if it is too close to the surface, it will create splashing, reduce the effective de-icing area, and potentially suck air, which may damage the prop and make noise.
• Avoid running 24/7: Continuous operation is not recommended. Use timers or thermostats to conserve electricity and maintain efficient de-icing.
• C-10 Thermostat Control or C-20 Thermostat and Timer Control are available for 120 V units only.
• The 230 V Thermostat with Adjustable Temperature Range is available for the 240 V units.
• Prevent ice damage: Be aware that units are at risk of freezing in if they fail during a power outage. Proper positioning and monitoring can minimize the risk.
• Public safety: Always use signage or other precautions to warn people of thin ice conditions, especially on public lakes.

How to keep your fish healthy, oxygenated, and stress-free all winter long

Winter presents a unique challenge for backyard and natural pond owners, especially when it comes to protecting fish. As temperatures drop, your pond transforms into a calmer, slower ecosystem where fish conserve energy and oxygen levels can decrease. 

With the right preparation and equipment, your pond can remain healthy and stable throughout the winter, providing your fish with a safe environment in which to rest until spring returns. This winter survival guide walks you through what happens beneath the ice, how feeding habits change, and the key tools that help your fish thrive in the winter.

What Happens to the Pond in Winter?

As winter settles in, your pond ecosystem begins to change. The densest water, around  4°C, sinks to the bottom, forming a warmer layer where fish gather for protection. A thin layer of ice forming on the water surface is normal and actually helps insulate the water below. The primary concern is when the pond is completely covered with ice, which can trap gases and limit oxygen exchange.

During this time, plants and beneficial bacteria slow down significantly. With less photosynthesis and slower breakdown of organic material, oxygen levels can drop to critical levels if the pond isn’t properly maintained. 

How Fish Adapt to Cold Water

Fish don’t truly hibernate, but they enter a low-energy rest state to survive winter. Their metabolism slows dramatically, their movement decreases, and they rest quietly near the bottom to conserve energy.

You’ll notice:

• Very slow swimming
• Long periods of resting
• Staying deeper in the pond (little surface activity)
• Less interaction and feeding interest.

This behaviour is normal; it is how fish naturally survive cold seasons in ponds and lakes.

How Feeding Changes in Winter

As pond water cools, fish metabolism slows dramatically. Their bodies become less efficient at digesting food; thus, feeding amounts and frequencies must be adjusted to minimize food waste and prevent water pollution.

During the active months, we highly recommend our nutrient-filled Pond Pro Premium Koi Food (available in 3mm and 5mm pellets) to support strong growth, colour, and activity in Koi and goldfish. For trout, we recommend our nutritious Pond Pro Trout Food (also in 3mm and 5mm pellets). 

However, when fish are outdoors year-round, their feeding habits change as temperatures drop. Below 10°C, their ability to digest food declines significantly, and by around 4°C, digestion virtually stops. Any food offered at this point may sit uneaten at the bottom, affecting water quality, or worse, fish may attempt to eat it and suffer internal issues that can become fatal.

Here’s a simple winter feeding guideline:

• Above 10°C: Continue feeding as usual
• Between 10°C and 4°C: Reduce feeding gradually and choose easily digestible formulas
• Below 4°C: Stop feeding entirely

When in doubt, use your fish’s behaviour as a guide. If they are sluggish and not coming to the surface, they are conserving energy; it’s best to let them rest until the spring.

Pellet Size and Type to Use

Fish size affects pellet choice, with a general role being that the pellet size should be roughly half the size of the fish’s mouth.

• For small fish under 6” in size, feed  3mm Floating Koi or Floating Trout Food
• For larger and mature fish that are 6” or bigger, we recommend our 5mm Floating Koi or Floating Trout Food

Should I Continue to Use Beneficial Bacteria Throughout the Winter?

It depends! For most bacteria, we recommend stopping treatment once the water temperature drops below 8°C. This ensures the bacteria's efficiency and productivity without wasting product. 

Depending on your regional location, you may be able to treat year-round; however, the reality for most Canadians is that we need to stop treating in mid-to-late fall. 

Our NaturalClear and Muck Pellets are designed to maintain clear, healthy water and contain resilient species of bacteria that perform well in Canada’s variable climate.

Formulated with cold-tolerant species that remain active in water temperatures as low as 3°C. That said, bacterial activity depends on temperature. As temperatures drop, their metabolic activity slows. For peak efficiency, we recommend treating as long as water temperatures remain at or above 8°C.

Be sure to monitor your water temperatures regularly. Once it falls below the recommended minimum, pause treatment and resume when the temperature rises back above that threshold. This ensures the bacteria remain active and effective without wasting product.

Can/Should I Continue to Run My Aeration System Throughout the Winter?

Yes, and it is often a good idea!

During the fall, ponds accumulate organic debris, including leaves, twigs, and decaying vegetation. If this material remains trapped under ice through the winter, it can decompose anaerobically, producing harmful gases that are harmful to fish and other aquatic life. When the pond surface freezes completely, these gases can’t escape, and oxygen levels drop.

Aeration during the winter is an effective way to prevent this problem. Aerated ponds generally remain ice-free longer, and the ice is typically thinner where the diffusers are located. By keeping an area open longer, gases don't become trapped, and when ice does form, the constant circulation and oxygenation prevent the anaerobic decomposition and subsequent harmful gas production.

How Do I Keep Larger Areas Free of Ice?
