Bottom Diffused Aeration vs Fountain Aeration

Bottom Diffused Aeration vs Fountain Aeration

When it comes to aerating a pond or lake, two popular methods are bottom diffused aeration and fountain aeration. Each method has its advantages and is suitable for different situations.

Bottom Diffused Aeration:

Also known as aeration by diffusers or bubble aeration, bottom diffused aeration involves the installation of an air compressor on the shore. Air is pumped through weighted sinking airline to diffusers placed at the bottom of the pond or lake. The diffusers release small bubbles that rise to the surface, creating a continuous and gentle water circulation. Click here to view our selection of aeration systems and equipment!

Advantages of Bottom Diffused Aeration:

  • Effective Oxygen Distribution: Bottom diffused aeration provides effective oxygen distribution throughout the water column, improving oxygen levels in the entire pond or lake.
  • Energy Efficiency: This method is generally more energy-efficient compared to fountain aeration.
  • Winter Operation: Bottom diffused aeration is effective in preventing some ice formation during winter, allowing gases to escape and maintaining oxygen levels for fish survival.
  • Deep Water: Bottom aeration shows greater improvement in water quality, especially in water over 8ft deep, by stimulating the growth of aerobic bacteria and new life at the bottom of the pond to become part of the natural filtration system, reducing muck and organics.

Fountain Aeration:

Fountain aeration, as the name suggests, involves the installation of decorative or aerating fountains in ponds or lakes. These fountains create a visually stunning display by shooting water into the air.

Advantages of Fountain Aeration:

  • Aesthetic Appeal: Fountain aeration enhances the beauty of the water body and can be a focal point in gardens or public spaces. Some fountains come with a wide array of nozzle patterns such as Kasco’s JF and Pond Pro’s Atlas fountains.
  • Oxygen Enrichment: The splashing action of the fountain helps increase oxygen levels at the surface, benefiting the water's upper layers and nearshore areas.
  • Pond Mixing: Fountain aeration promotes some level of pond mixing, but it might not be as effective in oxygenating deeper water layers compared to bottom diffused aeration.
  • Shallow Water: Many of our fountains can run in as little as 2ft of water depth. Fountains have similar aeration efficiency to bottom aeration at depths of 4ft or less.
